Generating your own power

A more permanent long term solution to the problems of load shedding, is to sever your reliance on Eskom for power and start generating your own. Mitch Miller lives completely off of Eskom’s power grid in Riebeek East, Eastern Cape, South Africa, having lived in numerous areas in South Africa, and a number of years in Ireland. The former Microsoft employee now makes a living welding security bars for windows and creating metal art. Miller harnesses solar power in his house. Several solar panels on his roof generate power which is stored in batteries. From this he runs his lights, power outlets, and his stereo among other things. The shower makes use of a gas geyser, which ensures an endless supply of hot water. For his welding, Miller uses a petrol powered generator in his workshop. Apart from the initial investments in the solar panels etc, and replacing the batteries every few years, Miller’s financial obligations with regards to power are comparatively lower than if he were to receive it from Eskom, with the added bonus of being unaffected by load shedding.
